In what has been an epidemic wave of chemical plant fires this year, another major incident has occurred at a Texas chemical facility, this time at the TPC Group plant in Port Neches. Multiple explosions within a 24-hour period have created yet another hazardous situation where the fires have been burning since 1 a.m. Wednesday.
To date, three people have been hurt, but thankfully, no one has been killed. However, due to the massive blaze, residents and business owners within a four mile radius of the facility were ordered to evacuate. Officials have also asked residents to minimize their exposure to the smoke by sheltering in place, closing windows and turning off their heating and air conditioning systems.
As with other area chemical plant explosions this year, there is a growing concern of exposure to harmful chemicals from the billowing black plumes of smoke, which can be seen from miles away. The TPC plant is known to house butadiene and Raffinate, with the former used in the manufacture of synthetic rubber and other products. According to the National Cancer Institute, butadiene is a known carcinogen that has been linked to an increase in cases of Leukemia.
If you believe you have been exposed to butadiene or any other substance from this fire, it is recommended to get a full blood workup and urinalysis as soon as possible.
Additionally, if you live near the TPC Group fire and are experiencing any symptoms that include, but are not limited to: dizziness, headache, nausea, shortness of breath and nasal congestion, it is recommended to immediately seek medical attention.
