According to data from the National Safety Council, America’s leading nonprofit safety advocate, approximately 46,000 people died on U.S. roads last year. That number is up 9 percent from recorded deaths in 2020, and up a staggering 18% from 2019. The increase in fatalities comes as roadway traffic across the country returns to pre-pandemic levels. Lack of safety restraints, distracted driving and impaired driving have been cited as contributing factors, although more research is being done to determine the primary causes.
In January, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg cited roadway deaths as a “national crisis” and vowed to do more at a federal level, including design changes to roads and mandating automatic emergency braking in passenger vehicles, among other initiatives.
Houston-area drivers are particularly vulnerable to accidents and fatalities and is such a problem, the Houston Chronicle dedicated an entire series addressing the topic a few years ago. According to their research, Houston drivers and pedestrians are 40% more likely to die on the road than drivers in Los Angeles and other cities.
