A deadly explosion in the Port of Corpus Christi has claimed the lives of two crew members of the Waymon L. Boyd dredging vessel, while two others are still missing as of Saturday afternoon. Six additional people were sent to local hospitals for burns and other injuries. Emergency crews were forced to close off several roads after being called to the scene.
The explosion occurred at around 8:00 am on Friday when the vessel struck a submerged natural gas pipeline. The ship erupted into flames and the fire on board was extinguished at approximately 10:00 pm later that evening after it broke apart and sunk. During a news conference, a Coast Guard representative noted that 6,000 gallons of diesel had spilled during the incident. Efforts are still underway to clean up the mess.
In addition to the tragic human toll, there are now concerns about the potential short and long-term environmental impacts from the incident, which is the latest in a string of industrial-related explosions that have plagued Texas’ coastal regions in the past 16 months including accidents in Port Neche, Baytown, Crosby, Deer Park and Watson Grinding & Manufacturing in Northwest Houston.
