It only took an hour for a drunk driver to cause Houston’s first fatal accident of 2014. Around 1 AM on New Year’s Day in downtown Houston a 21 year old man sped through a red light and hit another car, killing a passenger and injuring the driver in that other car. The drunk driver was subsequently charged with intoxication manslaughter. This wreck was just one of about a dozen major accidents which occurred between midnight and 6 AM on New Years Day.
Despite all of the warnings about drinking and driving on New Years it continues to be the deadliest day of the year for crashes involving a drunk driver according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Statistics from the Institute show that about half of fatal crashes on New Year’s Day involve a driver who had a blood-alcohol content above the legal limit. The New Years drunk driving danger also extends to pedestrians. January 1st is the most hazardous day for pedestrians with an average of 22 pedestrian deaths on that day each year, putting it ahead of the day many think is most dangerous for pedestrians, Halloween.
