Eight people were killed and 44 more were injured in a charter bus rollover crash this past weekend in Laredo. Investigators are still trying to determine just what caused the casino-bound bus crash on Saturday, but weather conditions and driver error may have played a factor.
As ABC 13 reports, the crash occurred on U.S. Highway 83, just over 45 miles north of Laredo. The bus belonged to OGA Charters and is said to have been heading to Eagle Pass, to drop off all passengers at a casino. It was raining in the area of the crash that morning, but investigators have yet to determine if the weather contributed to the crash.
“Our troopers are going to look into what happened but it’s going to take us some time,” one state trooper told reporters. “We just know the driver lost control.”
Determining Accountability in the Aftermath
When these tragic instances occur, it is critical that the authorities conduct a thorough investigation into what when wrong. In this case, the accident was so serious that federal authorities will also investigate: the National Transportation Safety Board revealed this weekend that they would be sending a team to Laredo to help determine what happened.
First and foremost, these investigations are crucial because they can help prevent similar crashes from ever happening again. Additionally, however, they place accountability with the responsible parties. When there is driver error in these cases, or negligence on behalf of the bus company, or even the municipality for dangerous road conditions, then the accident victims and the bereaved may have legal grounds to pursue relief.
