A tragic incident occurred early Sunday morning when a 5-year-old boy was killed by an alleged intoxicated driver on Fountain View.
Authorities say a BMW was driving near the Southwest Freeway when it collided with a Nissan, causing it to roll over. The Nissan was occupied by the young boy and his father, who were both transported to the hospital. The child did not survive and the father is currently recovering from his injuries.
The 26-year-old driver of the BMW took off on foot after the accident and according to police, appeared to be intoxicated. Charges are currently pending.
This tragic incident underscores the dangers of driving while intoxicated and there should be no excuse for these types of incidents to keep occurring with easy access to ridesharing Apps and alternative forms of transportation.
Here are some important tips and reminders if your plans involve alcohol:
• When planning a night out, always appoint a designated driver
• If you cannot find someone to be a designated driver, plan on using Uber or Lyft
• If you have even the slightest doubt about your sobriety DO NOT attempt to drive. Jails are full of people who thought they were sober enough to drive
• If you are hosting a party, you can be potentially liable if one of your guests drives home impaired and has an accident. Be sure to have non-alcoholic drinks for those in attendance who are designated drivers and be prepared to offer up a spare bedroom or couch to those who aren’t able to get themselves home safely
If you’ve been injured or have lost a loved one in an impaired driving accident, pursuing civil action against the driver at fault is one way to obtain justice. An experienced and knowledgeable attorney can help you protect your rights, including your right to be compensated for your losses.
