A massive explosion at a Didion corn milling plant in Cambria, Wisconsin, has claimed the life of a fourth worker who survived the initial blast on June 1 but later succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment in a hospital, news outlets reported earlier this week.
The bodies of three workers were pulled from the rubble after the explosion, and about a dozen injured workers were taken to area hospitals by ambulance and helicopter. Several other workers were treated on the scene and released.
While the cause of the explosion has not yet been confirmed, the plant’s operators faced an OSHA citation and fine for exposing workers to potentially explosive corn dust in January 2011, according to CBS News. Records showed that the plant’s filtration system lacked explosion protection at the time of the citation.
Corn dust poses a significant explosion threat, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. A Purdue University report cited by CBS said that keeping facilities free of dust and maintaining equipment are among the keys to preventing explosions caused by grain dust.
OSHA investigators were on the scene after the Didion milling plant explosion in Cambria. The blast and fire destroyed the corn milling facility which was located about 45 miles from Madison, Wisconsin. The explosion happened during the overnight shift on May 31-June 1 while at least 17 employees were at the site.
Victims of the blast and surviving family members may be entitled to compensation for their losses. Residents and property owners in Cambria may also have claims for compensation if they suffered personal injuries or property damage from the explosion at Didion milling in Wisconsin.
The attorneys at Ben Bronston & Associates have significant experience with providing legal assistance to victims of industrial explosions like the one that took place in Wisconsin earlier this month. For example, an explosion at a fertilizer plant in the town of West, Texas, killed 15 people and did extensive damage in April 2013.
Although the investigation of the Wisconsin corn mill explosion continues, it does appear that some degree of negligence on the part of plant operators may have played a role in the tragedy. Whether you are an injured worker, the surviving family of a fatally injured worker, or a nearby resident or property owner, you have a right to be protected from the negligence of those operating a plant as well as a right to be compensated for harm resulting from that negligence.
